Positioned in a former chancel area of the gallery, it presents a secular yet meditative piece in the once-religious building. His work asks us to surrender to an inevitable course of change, looking like a stained glass window or mosaic to suit Fabrica's ancient architecture and high ceilings. Since then, he has exhibited these all over the globe.Įno feels the work gives us "an imitation of our own mortality", reversing our traditional perception of the sights and sounds around us as recordable and repeatable events.

With the advent of "fast" computers, Eno moved on in the 1990s and began experimenting with the aesthetic possibilities of generative software by offering infinite non-linear patterns for an idle screen. Initially focussing on art before music, by the late 1980s Eno had leapt back into his initial sphere of interest, deploying TV monitors as sources of light rather than images, leading to art shows in the USA, England and Japan.įrom here he progressed to using projectors, concentrating on the notion of multiple projectors aligned on one point to create overlapping images, illustrating a plethora of different permeations in the process.ħ7 Million Paintings continues his exploration into light as an artist's medium aided by generative software. The piece allows the viewer to reflect on the idea of time and light in darkness, providing a striking image of the human condition, using this contemporary kaleidoscope as a focal point for quiet reflection. Watching from large seats in the intimate space, Eno's set of 77 million computer-generated paintings are being shown as part of the Brighton Festival he is the guest Director of this year. The accompanying music is also generated by the computer, so it's almost certain that the listener will never quite hear the same arrangement twice. Translucent, psychedelic, richly coloured and abstract, the computer generated images are mainly drawn on 35mm slides, forming component elements that are overlaid, reconfigured and transformed as each moment passes. A wallpaper or background (also known as a desktop wallpaper, desktop background, desktop picture or desktop image on computers) is a digital image (photo, drawing etc.) used as a decorative background of a graphical user interface on the screen of a computer, mobile communications device or other electronic device.
